Winter Resident Profile -

Krisaya Luenganantakul - 2008 Juried Winter Resident

As a Thai woman, I am interested in the culture of women, their body, mind and behavior. I am from a traditional conservative family that embraces a definite value system. I believe that women play different roles in each state of their life within Thai society. These roles like that of daughter or wife can change their emotion and spirit.

My current work is made up of the uterus form, which represents a woman’s body and mind. The forms portrayed within the uterus are metaphors for women’s behavior. As an example, when a woman sacrifices herself to take care of her family, she serves her family member’s need. On the surface of my work, I use the banana leaf image and tropical colors to represent my home country. In Thai mythology, Thai people believe that banana leaves represent abundance and the giving nature of a woman. The installation and display of my work is inspired by traditional Thai architecture. A transformation occurs throughout the entire installation where the individual objects transform from representation of physical labor to happiness of peaceful life. Clay is used to express my ideas. Each abstract form is different, yet representative of my perceptions of Thai women. Multiple objects intrigue me and I believe that repetitive objects create motif, pattern, motion and illusion to the viewers.

As Louise Bourgeois points out, “Art does not come from art, art comes from life. Art comes from the problems you have.” My work is from my life experience. Through the process of creating ceramic sculpture, I have looked at my life from different perspectives and with this comes a better understanding of myself as a Thai woman.
