The Randomizer is a hands-on workshop for Maine-based K–12 educators and their students designed to spark play, push participants beyond their comfort zones, and move work in unexpected directions. Part ceramic workshop, part game show, it emphasizes play, problem-solving, and creative risk-taking as essential tools for artistic growth and teaching practice. Educators may bring one or two students with them to this workshop.
Participants and the instructor respond to prompts generated by spinning the wheels of The Randomizer, which determine each project’s parameters, including forming method, style, and surface approach.
Participants are encouraged to recycle their work at the end of the workshop or fire in their personal kiln. No work will be fired at Watershed.
About the Instructor
Tom Hubbard is an interdisciplinary artist working across ceramics, photography, mixed media, and public art. His minimalist practice explores themes of loss, transition, and transience, and reinterprets industrial forms as elegant, ambiguous objects.Hubbard is an instructor at the Harvard University Ceramics Program. His work has been featured in Ceramics Monthly and Ceramics: Art & Perception and exhibited widely in the U.S. and The Netherlands. His work is held in several private and corporate collections including the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.
Public commissions include projects for the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, and the City of Columbus, Ohio. He has completed residencies at Watershed and Northern Clay Center and is currently a resident artist at the New Bedford Whaling national historic park.Born in San Francisco and holding a BFA from Indiana University, Hubbard grew up in the Midwest and lived in Maine, Ohio, Indiana, Georgia and The Netherlands. He currently resides in Massachusetts with his wife and a rescue dog from Mississippi.

Housing and Meals
On-Campus Housing
Single or double rooms are available. Participants will indicate whether or not they need housing in the registration form.
Bathroom facilities in our cabins are shared but can be used by one person at a time, much like a bathroom in a home. Participants must bring their own sheets, blankets, and bath towels. Pillows and mattress pads are provided.
Meals
- Breakfast is served on 10/24 & 10/25
- Lunch is served on 10/24 & 10/25
- Participants are responsible for their own dinner on 10/24 — there are a handful of grocery stores and restaurants nearby accessible via car.
- Vegetarian, vegan, & gluten-free diets can be accommodated
- Please feel free to bring supplemental food! Snacks are always a good idea.
